Tenor and Actor Al Gatmaitan gained vocal diction, language and performance training at the University of the Philippines, University of Santo Tomas as well as in Italy and in New York University, USA. He finished his Bachelor of Music (ETEEAP) under Dr. Ronan Ferrer at St. Paul University Manila. His three years stay in Italy for language studies made him join Spazio Teatro and Teatro Calabria, working with renowned masters in theatre arts including Italian soprano Maria Francavilla and Professor Rodolfo Chirico. He won second place with distinction at the First Filipino European Pop Song Festival in Reggio Calabria, Italy. He is a recipient of the Aliw Hall of Fame Award for Best Classical Performer in 2018, and was nominated at Broadway Philippines and Gawad Buhay Awards for his theater roles. This versatile artist has taken on numerous roles like Jesus in Lyric Opera’s Magnificat, Dr. Rizal in Ginugunita Kita and Macduff in M Episode both under Artist’s Playground, Joseph in Song of Joseph, General Artemio Ricarte for DUP’s Lagda ni Apolinario Mabini, Padre Salvi for CCP’s Noli Me Tangere among others. He has also crossovered into films and television. His film credits to name a few: In Nomine Matris (HUBO Productions), The Mistress (Star Cinema), Emir (Movie Musical).
He released his first self titled album under Artist Playground in 2017 with 2 original compositions by Mr. Jesse Lucas. One written by our National Artist for Literature Dr. Bienvenido Lumbera, “Sa Muling Pagsibol” which was commissioned for the Yolanda typhoon victims and one Italian poem written by his theater Professor and Poet, Prof. Rodolfo Chirico of Teatro Calabria in Reggio Calabria, Italy.
Al was part of Kapamilya Teleserye “Pamilya Sagrado,” “Walang Hanggang Paalam,” as Maj. Dante Francisco and as Lloyd for GMA’s Hearts On Ice which is currently airing on Channel 7. He’s one of the Artists for Sining Sigla, a CCP Office of the President’s Outreach Program, Awit at Tula, Pagbabalik tanaw sa Unang Hari ng Balagtasan. He played Antonio Pigafetta for “Lapu-Lapu, the musical,” which was presented for the reopening of the Metropolitan Theater under the NCCA(National Commission For Culture and the Arts) and as Pontius Pilate for Metropolitan Theater’s Lenten Presentation of Pasyon.
This 2024, Al Gatmaitan was part of Harana by Artes Organization, Obra at the Metropolitan Theatre this September, “Tra Musica E Sogno” this October. And he’ll be part of one of the films for the Metro Manila Film Festival this December.
